Solar Addison County is finally making it easy and affordable for homeowners and businesses all across Addison County to heat their water with the sun, by helping neighbors go solar, together. Through this program, heating your water with the sun costs the same as heating it with fuel oil or propane, and can even save you money from the start. For all of us who have ever wanted clean, renewable energy, that's made in Vermont, this is a great opportunity.

New program helping Salisbury families go solar

Solar Addison County is an innovative new program that is finally making it easy and affordable for homeowners, farmers, and business owners in Salisbury to heat their water with the sun.

A lot of Vermonters have wanted to go solar for a long time. But until now it’s been hard for folks to figure it out on their own, while prices were out of reach for the majority of families. So VPIRG, the state’s largest consumer and environmental protection non-profit, decided to help by creating a solar co-op for Addison County residents and businesses.

By partnering with Sunward, a Vergennes-based solar hot water company (their systems are made at their Winooski, Vermont factory), VPIRG has brought the cost of solar hot water down to about what Vermonters are already paying to heat their water with fuel oil, propane or electricity. According to Efficiency Vermont, the average family spends more than $600 per year on hot water. Through Solar Addison County, families can now heat their water with solar power for about what they were already spending, while protecting themselves from oil price hikes. And once the system is paid off, hot water costs are dramatically reduced along with pollution.

Since the program was launched in mid-July, the number of solar hot water installations in Addison County has already more than quadrupled (there were only 17 installed in the previous decade; already the program has added more than 60, including 2 in Salisbury). The program will only be running through December 23^rd, when VPIRG will move on to another county.

Online Learning Launched @ VT Public Libraries

Beginning this month, we are offering free access to over 500 online classes via Universal Class, a resource made available from Recorded Books, Inc. You can access these classes in the library or from home by using their individual library barcode. The State Department of Libraries used federal funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to pay for the first year of a two-year contract.

Universal Class is an online learning service providing high quality courses for citizens (generally high-school age and older) interested in the lifelong pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons.

Courses cover a wide range - from hobbies (arts and crafts, dog training, photography) to job skills (writing improvement, medical billing, computer programming, domestic violence counseling) to education and test preparation (writing for children, general science, Algebra, Homeschooling Strategies) - and much more!

Each class is self-paced with an instructor who interacts with students. Class curricula include homework assignments and students have up to six months to complete a class.

You are welcome to enroll in up to 5 courses. You have up to 6 months to finish each course. You have access to your course 24/7 via the Internet.

Attend class and do assignments on your schedule. Each course has a real instructor who you may communicate with using email.

These are non-credit courses and are provided for your personal enrichment. These courses are not intended to be a substitute for any state, government, licensing, or educational requirements.

Tuesday from 2:30-3:30 is Kid's Time at the Library!!

Dear Salisbury Parents and Kids,

Did you know your kids can come to the library after school on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30?

On Tuesdays while school is in session, we’ll spend a relaxed, unstructured hour devoted to kids. That's a good time to pick out some new books and read, unwind from school, play games, get help with homework, and make crafts.

Computers are available, also--(written parental permission is required for Internet use, please speak to me if your child wants to use the Internet while at the library without you).

For parents of kids at the Salisbury Community School, you can send a note to school in the morning and the bus driver will drop your kids off at the library. I’ll be there to welcome them.

Pick-up time is 3:30.

Kids of all ages are encouraged to visit the library with their parents at any time when we are open to get books, play in the playroom, and explore what we have to offer.

The setting is intimate, the words fresh and raw and real, humorous and sad and pointed.

We've had the pleasure of welcoming this group twice before, and I can't wait to be in the audience for the third time. It really is something not to be missed.

will speak at the library
on Thursday, March 24, at 7PM.

Irena Sendler rescued over 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. Her name was virtually forgotten until some students from a rural school in Kansas uncovered her story and dramatized it for a history project.

'Life in a Jar' is the story of Irena Sendler, and it is also the story of the three students who rediscovered her and brought her legacy to life.
Ultimately, it is the inspiring story of how one person can change the world.

Jack will discuss his book in our living room at the library. Refreshments will be served!

Yoga at the library

We are happy to offer a six-week series of yoga classes at the library!

Olga Pschorr, the instructor, is a longtime yoga practitioner and new teacher certified by the Yoga Center in Amherst, MA. She lives in Leicester, where she is the director of New Leaf Montessori preschool.

The fee for the class is $60 if you sign up for the series of six classes, or $12/class if you prefer to drop in, however, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please speak with the instructor if you would like to take this class but can not come up with the fee.

The class starts on Tuesday, March 8 upstairs in the Old Town Hall/library. It will run from 6:45 until 7:45 PM. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it along! Wear loose comfortable clothes.

PBS KIDS GO! Writing Contest for Children

PBS KIDS GO! Writing Contest for Children

The Department of Libraries is a Community Partner in the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, a local contest designed to promote reading, writing and art through hands-on, active learning. The contest encourages children in grades K-3 to celebrate the power of stories and illustrations by creating and submitting their own original pieces. Children may create their stories as part of a program at a public library or at a school, or they may do it totally on their own at home. A panel of Vermont experts including authors and librarians, will judge entries and select three winners from each grade. The winners will be announced in late April and will be featured on-air, online and at an awards ceremony broadcast on Vermont Public Television.

Contest participants will receive a certificate of achievement, as well as an opportunity to read their story aloud at storytime celebrations held at various locations throughout the state. Entries must be submitted with an official entry form and must meet contest rules.

Film about Lyme Disease

The Salisbury Library and the Salisbury School are hosting a screening of the film
'Under Our Skin'
on October 4 at 6:30 PM
at the Salisbury Community School.

This is an important film about the symptoms and treatment of lyme disease. Anyone who goes outside to hunt, garden, or play should be aware of the dangers of lyme disease! The film is most appropriate for adults and older adolescents and has some disturbing scenes of people suffering the symptoms of this disease.

Dayle Stratton will be on hand to demonstrate how to dress when going outdoors to prevent ticks from getting on the skin and will host a question and answer period after the film.

Refreshments will be served courtesy of the Salisbury Library Board and friends of the library.

Stories and New Books for Salisbury's Kids

On June 7 at 1 PM all the children at Salisbury Community School in Salisbury will attend a lively and colorful book delivery and storytelling presentation by the Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF). CLiF recently awarded a Rural Library Sponsorship to Salisbury Free Public Library. As part of this grant, CLiF is donating $2,000 in new children's books to the public library. Salisbury Free Public Library is one of 12 libraries in Vermont and New Hampshire to receive a CLiF sponsorship for spring 2010.

To celebrate the arrival of the new books and reach out to as many local children as possible, the special storytelling event will take place at the community school. On June 7, CLiF Director Duncan McDougall will visit the school to display all the beautiful books, perform stories, and share his love of reading and writing with the students. About 100 children from Kindergarten through Grade 6 will participate. The literacy program aims to inspire the children to discover the joy of reading and to check out new books from their local library.

After the presentation at the elementary school, Mr. McDougall will visit Linda Smith's House, an in-home daycare in Salisbury to tell stories to the children and give each child the opportunity to choose a book to take home and keep. CLiF will also donate an additional collection of children's books to remain on-site. A new part of a Rural Library Sponsorship, daycare and childcare center visits give CLiF the opportunity to nurture a love of reading among the younger children in the community and to help the public library establish a relationship with a local childcare center or provider.

"The local public library is the primary source of books for thousands of children who live in rural communities," explains McDougall. Unfortunately, due to shrinking budgets and rising book costs, many of these libraries possess only limited collections of children's books, and what volumes they own are often falling apart from over-use or are out-of-date. Library Director Jennifer Stefani was able to choose the new books from the CLiF booklist, which includes more than 800 titles -- classics, Caldecott and Newbery award winners, recent titles, and a wide selection of books by local authors and illustrators.

Salisbury Free Library's sponsorship is made possible by a donation from Andrew and Sarah Goodwin of Burlington, VT. The sponsorship is part of CLiF's Rural Library Program, which awards support to 24 rural libraries throughout New Hampshire and Vermont each year. The program was started in 1998 in an effort to boost the children's book collections of small libraries with the hope that increased exposure to great books and inspiring storytelling will go a long way toward improving children's literacy across the Twin States. CLiF has already sponsored more than 75% of all the rural public libraries across New Hampshire and Vermont.

CLiF is a non-profit organization founded in 1998. Its mission is to nurture a love of reading and writing among children throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. Through 16 successful literacy programs CLiF will touch the lives of more than 15,000 young readers and writers across the Twin States this year.

Summer Fun! Free and Reduced Entry Fee Passes at the Library

Thinking ahead to summer:

We have two free passes: one for Vermont State Parks day use areas (free entry for up to 8 people in one car for a day) and another for Historic Sites within Vermont (free entry for a family or a group of up to 8 people for one day).

We also have a reduced entry fee pass for the Echo Center in Burlington. This pass allows two adults and up to three children to enter for $2 each.

Ancient Roads and Old Maps Talk at Historical Society

Ancient Roads and Old Maps in Vermont will be the subject of a one hour talk August 19th 6:00 pm at the Old Town Hall Salisbury VT.

This event is free to the public and sponsored by the Salisbury Historical Society.

David Allen of Chesterfield, New Hampshire, who has reproduced many old Vermont maps, will discuss how to use old maps for research into ancient roads and house sites. Allen’s talk will review the entire range of historic maps of Vermont, from the earliest Colonial lotting plans through the detailed homeowner name maps of the mid 19th century. The talk will be illustrated with slides showing examples of many state and local maps and the history they reveal. Allen will have on hand several examples of original maps, and some paper reprints as well. Maps are always an interesting subject, but especially so now since many Vermont towns are struggling with the Ancient Roads issue. Some of Allen’s map reproductions will be available for sale at the event. Allen has posted some examples of old maps at his web site www.old-maps.com.

David Allen lives in New Hampshire and owns a land surveying business in western Massachusetts, but spends most of his free time wandering about Vermont. He is an active outdoorsman and amateur historian with Vermont roots who enjoys exploring back roads looking for old cellarholes and mill sites. He also owns a small map publishing business called “Old Maps” which has reproduced many old New England maps over the past twenty years. Allen has acquired scans of several thousand old Vermont town and village maps. Two years ago he completed the re-publishing (on CD) of all of the old “Beers” atlases and county land ownership maps of Vermont.

Dear Kids and Parents of Salisbury,

Happy Summer! Time for relaxing, playing outside, camping, swimming, fishing, sleeping late, and reading. Yes!!! Reading!!! Reading during the summer is the best way to help kids to maintain reading skills they learned during the school year. It's also a wonderful way to pass a rainy day inside or a sunny day on the grass.

The Salisbury Free Public Library in the Old Town Hall on Maple St. is open all summer long. On Tuesdays we have special time just for kids from 2:30-4:00, but you and your kids are welcome any time!

The Summer Reading Program at our library has a goal of getting each and every kid in Salisbury to read two books over the summer. Please bring your child in any time from now until the end of summer to sign up and get a reading log. A great time to register is on June 16 at 2:30 when we're having a book swap at the library! Bring in one or two books that your kids have read and want to trade for other books. While you're there, enjoy a treat and sign up for summer reading, and for a library card if you don't already have one. All summer readers will be invited to our End Of Summer party on August 25 at 2:30 and will receive a small prize for participation. Salisbury Library Warms Up Winter with Children’s Poet Ted Scheu

In conjunction with the Vermont Reads program, and in celebration of the remarkable legacy of Robert Frost, the Salisbury Library is pleased to present children’s poet, Ted Scheu (That Poetry Guy) on Thursday, January 8th 2009, from 3:30 to 4:45 PM, for an afternoon writing workshop. Children in 3^rd-6^th grade are invited. Younger and older children who love to write are also welcome!!!! Fasten your seatbelts, and get ready for an afternoon of smiles and fine writing with a top children’s poet.

Ted will share some of his own fun and funny poems and then he’ll lead a fun writing workshop where each child will write a poem that is reminiscent of one of Robert Frost’s.

Scheu lives in Middlebury. He is a former teacher who now travels all over the world as a visiting author conducting poetry writing workshops in schools for grades K-6. His poems have been published worldwide, most recently in two new collections called, “I Froze My Mother and Other Seriously Funny Family Poems,” and “I Tickled My Teachers,” Cold Tree Publishing, TN (2008) and in many popular anthologies in the US including, ”I Invited a Dragon to Dinner” by Philomel, NY (2002), and “If Kids Ruled the School”, “Rolling in the Aisles,” and “Miles of Smiles,” by Meadowbrook Press, MN (2004), and in the UK in six anthologies published by Macmillan, Scholastic, and Hodder Children’s Books. He also has a self-published CD of his poems called, “Warning, Don’t Eat More Than Three!” His work may also be found at his web site at www.poetryguy.com. Some of Scheu’s books will be available for sale and signing on the day of the workshop.

Great books at the library!

In the past few months, the library has received wonderful donations from the Lincoln Library and also from the Jeudevine Library in Hardwick.

The Lincoln Library 'adopted' us and gave us a lot of books they had received as donations but already had copies on the shelves.

The Jeudevine Library must have looked on our wishlist on this page. One gloomy gray day last week I went across the street to check the mail, and there was a book-shaped package waiting for me. I thought 'that's odd,' since I hadn't ordered any books through Inter-library loan lately.

I opened the package, and there was a brand new copy of 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle' which I'd been wanting for the library! Wow! The weather stayed gray, but it was like the sun came out inside the library.

Imagination Library--A Book a Month for All Addison County Kids from Ages 0-5

Thanks to the group Addison County Readers and to the initiative of the Ilsley Library, we are able to participate in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library here in Salisbury.

Children who reside in Addison County and are under the age of 5 are eligible to sign up. They will receive an age-approprate book in the mail every month up until they turn 5.

Come in to the library and sign up now so that your children can get their first books in January!

Local History Talk

Last night Max Petersen gave a great talk about local history at the library as a kick-off for our Vermont Reads program.

The event was a joint venture between the school library, the public library, and the historical society. Twenty-two people attended the talk. There were a lot of questions and discussion about how homes, roads, and town buildings have changed throughout the years. Some people lingered afterwards to enjoy conversation and refreshments. Barbara Andres' cookies disappeared very quickly!

A tape of Max's talk will be available soon at the library for those who were unable to attend.

Our next event will be October 16 at 6:30 in the library, when we'll be looking at town pictures and talking about family history with Barry Whitney, our town's genealogy expert.

Historical Society Events

The Salisbury Historical Society, in conjunction with the Salisbury School Library and the Salisbury Public Library, is presenting two programs to promote an understanding of our own town's history and to encourage people to read and discuss the Vermont Reads book Counting on Grace.

OCTOBER 2

Max Petersen, local historian and author of Salisbury: From Birth to Bicentennial and other local history books, will speak about the historical tensions between East and West Salisbury on October 2 at 6:30 p. m. at the public library.

OCTOBER 16
6:30 p.m.

On October 16 at 6:30 p.m. Barry Whitney and members of the Salisbury Historical Society will again meet at the Library to display and discuss historic photos of Salisbury town and townspeople. We invite you to bring your own old family photos to discuss and share. Barry Whitney will be on hand to assist people who want to work on discovering more about their family history.

NOVEMBER 7

The Salisbury Community School will hold a book discussion for school children and their parents on November 7 at 7 p.m. at the school library.

After-school Programs Begin!

Please join us for our children's programs on Tuesdays from 2:30- 4:30.

Throughout the year we will be reading aloud from chapter books, and doing writing projects, drama activities, and seasonal crafts. If there's enough interest, we'll also plan a talent show for the spring.

Parents who want their children to come to the library can send a note to the school giving permission for their children to get off the bus at the library on Tuesdays.

A half-hour story time on Thursdays from 4:00-4:30 will suit children from age 3-5 with their parents or caretakers.

The all-ages kick-off party will be on September 25 at 3:00. We'll have brownies, introduce ourselves, sign up for library cards, and make duct tape wallets to hold the library cards. We'll also choose the first book of the year, which I'll read aloud during part of our time each week.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to come in and visit the library when they pick up their children, as well as any other time. Research shows that kids read more when they see their parents read. That's what we're all about!

Counting on Grace

We are reading 'Counting on Grace' by Elizabeth Winthrop this fall in conjunction with Vermont Reads 2007, a one-book community reading program by the Vermont Humanities Council.

The novel is about a 12-year old girl in a Vermont mill town in 1910. At that time in our history, child labor laws were weak and were often ignored, skirted, or just plain broken. Children worked in mills along with their parents, rather than going to school. This is an unflinchingly realistic, ultimately hopeful story of those children and how they used their education to begin the slow move to change the country's laws and views. The Salisbury Community School and the Salisbury Free Public Library are teaming up with the Salisbury Historical Society to host some events to talk about this book, Salisbury history and personal family histories.
